SEWER DEPARTMENT
Currently only about 20% of the Township is serviced by sewers. Most of our sewer customers are part of our new grinder pump system. These pumps are owned by the resident and certain care procedures should be followed. We will be mailing out a letter to our customers on these procedures. Please note that it is the residents’ responsibility to provide an electric supply to these pumps. If your electricity goes out for any reason you should limit your use of your sewer. More specifics will be addressed in your upcoming letters.

Recently, we have added many new sewer customers in the Township.  Although we have provided the "unofficial" spread of the payments that will be added to your winter tax bill over the next 7 years at 5.5% interest beginning in December 2005.  Remember that you can pay off the special assessment at any time without penalty and the interest would be prorated and stop the month you are paying it off.  If you have not already received a spreadsheet of payment breakdown, you may stop by the treasurer’s office and pick one up.

In addition, the water bill for those new sewer customers will now include sewer usage.  Sumpter Township’s sewer rate is $3.20 per 1,000 gallons of water use.   Sewer System Debt Service Charges is $1.00 per 1,000 gallons of metered water flow.  Also, each customer pays an administration fee of $9.19 per quarter, plus any additional costs involved beyond the normal quarterly reading of the water meter.  Be advised that if we cannot get an actual read due to a dog in the yard, locked gate, or are just unable to access the meter for repair, your sewer usage will also be based on an estimated read . In an effort to save money and conserve water, we are providing you with the following helpful tips:

Helpful Water Tips

  • A household faucet runs at 3 to 5 gallons a minute
  • The average American family turns on the water tap 70-to-100 times per day. [U.S. EPA]
  • Twice a year, check all faucets inside and outside for leaks.  Replace worn out fixtures, washers, O-rings, and hose connections.  Turn off faucets firmly.
  • A faucet that drips at the rate of one drop per second will waste 2,700 gallons in 12 months. [American Water and Energy Savers, Inc.]
  • Check appliances' connecting hoses and faucets for leaks.  Even a pinhole leak wastes up to 170 gallons a day.
  • 40% of the water used each day by the average person is flushed down the toilet. [Fiji Natural Artesian Water]
  • Install a low flow showerhead and keep showers under five minutes.
  • Avoid using the toilet for a wastebasket.  Every flush you eliminate can save between two and seven gallons of water.
  • Filling the bath tub uses about 30 gallons of water.  Plug the tub when you shower; how full does the tub get?
  • Wash clothes wisely.  Match washer's load selector to your load size.

Senior Citizen Water Rates

Postcards were mailed out to all residents indicating that the Board has approved the “Special Senior Water Rate.”  Applications are now available in the Treasurer’s Office.  In order to be eligible you must be 65 years or older, be a Sumpter Township resident homeowner, and be able to provide proof of both, and sign an affidavit. The purpose of the affidavit is to bill you for your actual water usage, instead of the current minimum billing procedure.  This procedure will be implemented in the coming months on your quarterly water bill.  If you have and questions, please contact us at (734) 461-6201 ext 242.

Delinquent Water Bills
Any delinquent water bills where the homeowner has not made payment arrangements with the water department clerk will be assessed a 10% penalty and will be placed on the homeowner's tax bill after September 1st.

Make Sure Your Bill Is Accurate
Make sure we are charging you for actual usage on your water bills.  The front of your water bill will have “R” for “actual” and “E” for “estimated” readings.  Your sewer charges will be based on your water usage.  If you have a dog, locked gate or some other reason that we cannot get a good “actual” reading, please call to make arrangements to receive cards that you can use to read your owns meter.  If your bills are estimated and you do not know why, please call Dawn at (734) 461-6201, ext 24.
